Basic and Essential Medicines for Goats

CD/T antitoxin

Purpose:

CD/T or CD&T antitoxin contains Clostridium perfringens types C & D Tetanus Toxoid, and is useful for preventing over-eating disease (enterotoxemia), sudden death syndrome associated with scours, and Tetanus toxidity. This provides immunity to Tetanus toxins found in the soil, and prevents toxic shock from the animal ingesting too much grain and/or fodder.

Dosages and Frequency:

.5ml for first inoculation at 1-2 weeks of age or at disbudding.
1 ml for booster at 6 months.
2 ml for annual booster.

ProBios

Purpose:

This oral paste is used for providing the essential microbial bacteria and Vitamin B for digestion and development of the rumen. It is necessary if using antibiotics on an animal, since the antibiotics will interfere with the normal function of the rumen.

Plain Yogurt may be used as a substitute for this if not available, as it provides the live acidophilus bacterium culture.

ProBios should be refrigerated, due to the fact that it is an active culture.

Dosage:

Follow directions on the tube. They are generally predosed. If using yogurt, 2-4 tsp. once a month or as needed depending upon condition of animal.

ToxiBan

Purpose:

This rather nasty looking black substance is a MUST for any potential poisoning of a goat. Since most goats "taste test" before ingesting, sometimes what tastes good, doesn't mean it's good for them. Having this activated charcoal suspension can save the life of an otherwise sick animal. The trick is catching the symptoms of poisoning quickly and being able to administer dosages. It's not the best tasting stuff either, but it will absorb many toxic substances.

Dosage:

5-10ml per pound body weight.

Penicillin-G

Purpose:

This general antibiotic should be on hand for infections, or whenever a bacterial pathogen is causing a problem in an animal. Care should be taken when administering any antibiotic, as it's broad spectrum capability may inhibit the normal functioning of the rumen, killing off the bacteria normally found there. Probitoics should be used to help counter this side effect of the Penicillin.

Dosage:

1-2ml twice daily for a period of 5-7 days.
